I have a feeling that the agriculture sector of India is underutilized and under planned. Few farmers have a proper knowledge of the supply/demand conditions, weather forecasts, government policies and the ways to avail them. Hence the idea of a Rural Information Network that will help the country utilize the agricultural resources to their fullest potential came to my mind.
WHAT:
1. Get the technology to the farmers [ water management, soil management, best fertilizers at low cost, weather forecasting, economics, etc]
2. Get the market rates to the farmers [give them bargaining power]
3. Sharing of best practices all over India [Eg best methods of farmers in Punjab ---> farmers in AP]
4. Advisory for the farmers on producing the right crops based upon global supply/demand projections, weather forecast, soil conditions, crop rotation and irrigation facilities.
How:
Videos are ideal, but bandwidth/language is a problem So, have something similar to slideshows, with text/low resolution images (even cartoons) with low if audio.
Other way would be using mobile phones to push this information.
One can observe that most of the village residents tend to follow the authority figures in the village. Disseminating his information through him would reduce the costs further.
Market:
70 % of India lives in villages, Assuming that 1/10 of them do farming, we have 1,027,015,247*0.7/10 = 71,891,067 [72 million] potential customers.
Math later, but the potential is huge
Challenges:
-The literacy rate among farmers is low
-Internet reach and Network Bandwidth is not favorable to serve as a medium.
-Publicity - google AdWords make no sense. We need to reach thru alternative media - TV, radio, regional newspapers, pamphlets(eg. Along with the fertilizer ads, etc)
